The poet William Wordsworth lived at Rydal Mount from 1813 until his death in 1850. Wordsworth became one of England’s most celebrated poets. It was while he was living at Rydal Mount that he was appointed Poet Laureate to Queen Victoria. The house is a profound insight into the latter half of the poet’s life. It is full of original artefacts and furniture owned by Wordsworth.
The gardens at Rydal Mount embody the ideals of the Romantic Poets and have beautiful views over Rydal Water. Fascinating at all year round, they’re particularly bursting with colour during the summer months. Wordsworth’s Writing Hut still stands in the garden.
There is a 20 minute guided tour through the rooms on the ground floor of Rydal Mount and then 25 minutes self-guided around the rooms on the upper floors. The total duration in the house is 45 minutes.
