About Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway
Since 1875, the Railway has connected the mines of the Eskdale valley with the former strategic Roman port of Ravenglass. Originally built to a 3ft gauge, it was re-gauged in 1915 by famous model maker Bassett-Lowke. La’al Ratty, its local nickname, means “narrow way” in olde Cumbrian dialect.
Today, the Railway is an award winning heritage visitor attraction and Lake District icon, living up to its “must do” reputation for all ages. The seven mile, 40 minute journey from coast to mountain traverses the nature reserves of the Ravenglass estuary before ascending through ancient woodlands towards the foothills of England’s highest Mountains, the Scafell range.
Excellent facilities at both ends of the line, a choice of open and closed cosy carriages with steam and diesel engines in regular service. A great all weather day out.
The Turntable Café, Ravenglass Gift Shop, Information Centre, Railway Museum, Cycle Trails, Fellbites Café, Scafell Gift Shop, The Eskdale Room, The Ratty Arms, Free Wi-Fi, Free commentary app and Children’s Playgrounds. Both stations have private function rooms and catering facilities which are ideal for private functions, parties and conferences.
